English Acquisition Program

The goal of Tolleson Union High School District’s language program is to develop English language skills to the level of proficiency, using Structured English Immersion models, where students can function in an all-English academic environment and achieve their goals of graduation from high school and success in the future.

Structured English Immersion (SEI) Program

If students receive composite scores that are below the Proficient Level on the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) state assessment, we place them in the Sheltered English Instruction (SEI) program.

The objective of the SEI classroom is to teach specific identified skills within the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) appropriate for the English proficiency levels of the students in the class. We divide instruction within the block into four time allocations, focusing on oral English/conversation, reading, writing, and grammar, with instruction driven by each particular domain as aligned to ELPS and English Language Arts Standards.

Parents play a key role in their children’s education. We inform parents of all available instructional services and contact them when we determine a need for their student’s successful academic achievement.

Portable Assisted Study Sequence (P.A.S.S.) Program

P.A.S.S. (Portable Assisted Study Sequence) is a nationally recognized program. The primary objective of the P.A.S.S. Program is to enable credit-deficient migrant and non-migrant students to accumulate credits toward graduation from specially designed competency-based courses aligned to Arizona academic standards.

The P.A.S.S. packets are similar to correspondence courses, and students complete them outside the regular school program. Students can earn ½ credit for each correspondence course with a maximum of four credits throughout the program. The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredit the Arizona Migrant P.A.S.S. Program.
